Living in The Mission
The Mission is the cultural and culinary heart of San Francisco — and its sunniest neighborhood. Murals, taquerías, Michelin-starred restaurants, dive bars, two BART stops, and Dolores Park all packed into a flat, walkable, endlessly energetic grid. If you want the most happening version of the city, this is it.

The vibe
Vibrant, diverse, and creative. The Mission layers its deep Latino heritage with one of the most acclaimed restaurant scenes in the country and a nightlife density that runs from dive bars to natural-wine dance floors. Valencia Street is the trendy spine; Mission Street keeps it grounded and authentic; the side streets are murals, taquerias, and bakeries. On a sunny weekend, Dolores Park becomes the city's backyard.

Getting around
One of the best-connected neighborhoods in SF. BART at 16th & Mission and 24th & Mission gets you to FiDi in 10 minutes and SFO in 30. The J Church Muni Metro runs along the Dolores Park edge to downtown. Buses include the 14 Mission, 22 Fillmore, 33 Ashbury, and 49 Van Ness. The neighborhood is flat and genuinely bike-friendly — Valencia has a protected bike lane the whole length. Easiest place in the city to live car-free.
Renting here
A wide mix — classic Victorian flats above storefronts, newer condos near the BART stops, and everything in between. Rents vary widely by block: Valencia is pricier than Mission Street, and the area closer to Potrero Hill tends to be cheaper than 18th and Guerrero. Generally more moderate than the northern neighborhoods, with great value for the location, sun, and transit. A top pick for roommate groups who want nightlife, food, and BART.
Best for: food, nightlife, sun, transit access, and the most energetic culture in the city.
